Special Characters for Password (IDRAC)

$

I would like to know which special characters (non-alphanumeric) are not acceptable for passwords for DRAC 5,6,7 ?

They appear to support different character sets and the information are not complete in the user guides.

Is there a difference for the password requirements in DRAC for blade / poweredge server ?

Thanks.

EDIT:

the key to this question should be " non-supported special characters when using the RACADM command to set users passwords."

VRTX CMC Web interface incredibly annoying issue

$

Is anyone that owns a VRTX having issues with the CMC web interface not updating after changes are applied? My employer bough 14 of these. They all have dual CMCs with the enterprise license.

An example of how the issue manifests is as follows:

  1. Creating a virtual disk: After the creation job is submitted and it 'completes', the web interface won't show the virtual disk at all, just the initial link to create one. So you think to yourself, 'oh, it must have failed or something' and you click on the link. Except the drives you previously used to create the virtual disk are no longer showing as available. So it used them to create the virtual disk but it won't show you the virtual disk UNTIL you reset/failover the CMC.
  2. Assigning virtual disk to nodes: You try to assign a virtual disk to the node(s) then click apply. You get confirmation that they are assigned via a popup but once you close it and the assignment screen refreshes, it still shows the nodes as having 'no access'. This virtual disk is indeed assigned since it will show up in my ESXi storage device list, but the CMC doesn't think it is UNTIL you reset/failover the CMC.
  3. Assign a hotspare:  set a disk as a hotspare, apply. You get confirmation that it is done, screen refreshes and disk still shows as 'unassigned' instead of showing as a global hot spare. Guess what you have to do for the web interface to show the correct info? Yep, reset/failover the CMC.

This is making what it should be a simple deployment take 2 to 3 times as long as it should as I'm basically forced to reset/failover the CMC after EVERY CHANGE!!!!

It's happened with VRTX running CMC firmware 1.30, 1.31 and now also with 1.35 plus mainboard firmware 1.36 or 1.41. Doesn't matter which browser I use either (IE, Firefox, Chrome) the behavior is the same.

Is anyone else running into this issue?

Trying to generate a new self-signed cert via the DRAC, but keep the size to 2048 bits.

racadm config -g cfgRacSecurity -o cfgRacSecCsrKeySize 2048

sslresetcfg sets the cert back to 1024...

Any advise on how to get a 2048 self-signed certificate?

iDRAC 7 timezone configuration (console)

Hi,

I need to configure some M620 (about 200), I have created scripts to configure everithing, but can not configure the most easy (or so I thougt) parameter, the timezone.

I got this output:

/admin1-> racadm set idrac.time Europe/Madrid
ERROR: SWC0244 : Invalid Fully Qualified Device Descriptor (FQDD).

The NTP and timezone console configuration are supported since version 1.30.30, M620 idrac's version is 1.57.57, I'm using the same command showed in documentation.

Any advice?.

Ludicrously Extreme Values for Temperature on DRAC- anybody seen this?

Who watches the Watchmen?

Well, in my case, it's now a Zabbix server. If you'd like to keep yourself busy for a while, setup a monitoring server, and discover all the things that have been going wrong that you didn't know about.

After dealing with the temperature issues etc. that had gone unnoticed, things were quiet. Until <spwam> I get a text that average temperature on a machine is suddenly totally bad.

Fine, what's the value?

18446744073709551488 degrees Celsius, ambient temperature. Previous value, 21c. Next value, 21c.

(When I said extreme, I meant extreme.)

After ruling out spontaneous fusion occurring and still leaving my server operational, I realized this must be a false reading. For the mathematically curious, by the way, that's (2^64)-128. Obviously, there's a limit on values with a DRAC data bucket.

Well, one machine one time. Haha. It's a good story, and the graph is amusing.

But now's it's happened on several machines. That's several machines whose lovely history data, formerly showing victory over the evils of heat through repaired air conditioners, now shows averages in the teracelsius range. Leaving aside the idea of deleting those aberrant points of data because I don't want to have to continually do that, I'm curious if anybody has seen similarly bizarre values before. I couldn't run across any.

These are on PE2900 and PE2950 machines.

If not, I'm not ruling out spontaneous fusion any more, and will attempt to get grants.

Thanks.

Dual Homed NIC with iDRAC7 Express

Hi All,

I got Dell T320 12G server with iDRAC7 express, no dedicated iDRAC card on server.

Last week, I've installed SUSE Linux 11 SP3, also set the IP addresses as

eth0 - 10.2.4.161 255.255.255.248 - Brocade 5720

eth1 - 10.2.4.165 255.255.255.248 - Brocade 5720

Gateway - 10.2.4.164

I connect the LAN cable only to eth0 with my laptop, and try to ping 10.2.4.161 and 10.2.4.165, I can

reached to both IPs. I think it's abnormal, should be reach only to 10.2.4.161 not to 10.2.4.165.

But after I disconnected the network cable from eth0 and plugged in to eth1, I can't ping to any IPs.

What I want to do is,

1.completely turn off iDRAC7express

2. setup simple NIC features for both cards

Can anyone help me on this one? Thanks!

Establishing monitoring on nine Dell UPS that do not have management cards

Goal - Establish monitoring on nine Dell UPS that do not have management cards.

  • Dell UPS 1000W x 8
  • Dell UPS 3750W x 1

Is it possible to daisy chain the USB  or Serial (RS-232) ports on Dell UPS?  Trying to get monitoring via Dell UPS Management Software setup on eight Dell UPS 1000Ws and one Dell UPS 3750W.  The eight UPS are racked together, but none of them have a management card installed.  I am trying to figure out if it is possible to daisy chain the USB or Serial ports, or do I need to connect each UPS to its own USB or Serial port on a server/PC?

Thanks!

Unable to configure DNS servers using config file

$

I'm trying to configure DRACs/CMCs using config files and most of the settings are applying correctly but the DNS Servers and DNS name are not being applied when I do a 'racadm config -f configfile.txt'

Here is the relevant [cfgLanNetworking] section from the config file:

[cfgLanNetworking]

cfgNicEnable=1
cfgNicVLanEnable=0
cfgNicIPv4Enable=1
cfgNicUseDhcp=0
cfgDNSDomainNameFromDHCP=0
cfgDNSRacName=MYSERVRRACNAME
cfgDNSRegisterRac=1
cfgDNSServersFromDHCP=0
cfgNicIpAddress=192.168.0.111
cfgNicNetmask=255.255.255.0
cfgNicGateway=192.168.0.1
cfgDNSServer1=192.168.1.1
cfgDNSServer2=192.168.2.2
cfgDNSDomainName=mydomain.com

If I run the configuration again (without issuing a 'racadm racresetcfg' first) the settings do get applied properly.

The server i'm using for testing is a m610 however I will be needing to use the same method on several other 11g and 12g (possibly 13g soon) server models as well.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this something unique to 11g servers or the m610 specifically (or do other models have other similar quirks?)  Or should I just push multiple configuration files to address this kind of issue?

Thanks in advance

Can not boot PE T710

$

I have a PE T710 with iDRAC6 which is refusing to boot. It gets stuck before the monitor comes on and so there is absolutely no display coming from the server. That is, there is no bios welcome screen or memory check output. The monitor LED stays amber.

This is a result of performing a number of FW and BIOS updates

1)      Power supply went from M1.01.04 -> M1.01.09

2)      ST9500430SS DS62->DS66 (drives)

3)      BIOS 2.1.9 -> 6.40

4)      Nextreem II BCM5709 Gigabit Ethernet rev20 (eth2,3 and prob 1) 5.2.7->7.8.53

5)      Dell 32 bit diagnostics v.5142A0,5142.2. 5142A0->5158A3

6)      PERC H700 Integrated Controller 0 FW. 12.3.0-0032->12.10.6-001

7)      ST9146852SSFW HT62->HT66

8)      Dell OS Drivers Pack V6.3.0.23 6.3.0.23-> 7.4.0.10

9)      iDRAC6. 1.5->1.97

10)   Dell Lifecycle Controller V1.4.0.A445, A01. 1.6.5.12->1.4.0.445

Although during these updates, the output was 'success' apparently after rebooting the server something went wrong. For example the iDRAC still lists the bios as 2.1.9, even though it was supposedly updated to 6.4

On the status LCD on the front of the T710 it usually says "system booting..." and the number of dots is 3 or less. The number is not the same on each boot, but it never gets past that message. The post code is 0x05 which is "BIOS shadow into memory" which according to the iDRAC6 is not a problem.

The iDRAC6 was successfully updated to the latest FW and the lifecycle controller as well. I suspect the BIOS update did not complete successfully or was done in the wrong order.

So I have tried in vain to update the BIOS through the iDRAC6 but it says that the win32 DUP for any version of BIOS using the iDRAC6 web interface update FW page. In fact from browsing google for a few days, it is not immediately clear if the BIOS can be upgraded from iDRAC6. The web interface returns the error that the uploaded file format is incorrect.

I have also used the iDRAC6 update FW to update the iDRAC6 FW to its latest version after rolling it back to 1.5. I also repaired the lifecycle controller successfully, but I cannot update the BIOS!

I have been told that I should replace the mobo. Your advice is welcome.

Hi

When doing a Nessus scan today i get a critical security vulnerability when scanning our only idrac 7 system on our network. Nessus says that the vulnerability is confirmed. If this is a real vulnerability a patch must be released asap.

The idrac version is 1.57.57

Nessus plugin id: 77829

Description
The remote web server is affected by a remote code execution vulnerability due to an error in the Bash shell running on the remote host. A remote, unauthenticated attacker can execute arbitrary code on the remote host by sending a specially crafted request to a CGI script that passes environment variables.
Output
Nessus was able to verify the issue exists using the following request :

GET / HTTP/1.1
Host: 192.168.20.3
Accept-Charset: iso-8859-1,utf-8;q=0.9,*;q=0.1
Accept-Language: en
Connection: Keep-Alive
User-Agent: () { ignored; }; /bin/sleep 10;
Pragma: no-cache
Accept: image/gif, image/x-xbitmap, image/jpeg, image/pjpeg, image/png, */*

This produced the following output :

Monitoring Dell HW via iDrac

$

   We are trying to monitoring the Dell PowerEdge server via iDrac 5. The OS currently running is Red Hat Linux. From my research and study. if I want to monitoring  the server H/W health using SNMP through iDrac. The server has to install the OMSA software and the OMSA services have to be started. I believe the document mention that iDrac 7 has full snmp package, therefore the OMSA won't need to be installed.

      Here is my questions, I hope anyone could help me to clear out the question.

1. Do I need to install the OMSA on the RedHat in order to monitoring H/W if i am using the SNMP protocol through iDrac port ?  Someone told me  it won't need to be installed which I don't think it is correct.

2.Do I must enable SNMP pass through on OMSA configuration in order to get the data through iDrac port?

3. Do you have to use different OID if  you query SNMP through Ethernet port  or iDrac ?

4. One of my server has only two services running

dsm_sa_datamgr32d   is running

dsm_sa_eventmgr32d is running

 and  without  dsm_sa_snmp32d (not sure why it is not showing up when starting dataeng serveice), will that be the reason that I can't get any snmp data response ?

Dell OpenManage V. 6.5 managed NODE installed. Can't make settings changes...won't accepy my Admin Credentials.

My Dell OpenManage 6.5 Managed NODE application installed OK, finally.  I had to force down some services and restart the server during the uninstall of the previous OMSA instance (it would no longer work, so I elected to reinstall).  Now, though, I can't save/make any changes through the browser interface.  The browser instance won't accepy any of my Admin Credentials when the popup asks for them.  I am shown as the Administartor in the brower window, top left.

I can see everything I need to see in this managed node, while logged in as administrator to this server.  I, however, cannot make any task requests or save changes to, lets say, SMTP server settings or anything like this, as when I am prompted for username and password, OM will not accept either of the Doman admin or local admin credentials.  Is there possibly an old set of credentials that this software has retained and is looking for to allow admin tasks, etc?

Note: I did have to uninstall the previous iteration of OM because after some windows updates I could no longer user the OM Server Administrator software.  It would not "see" the machine and components correctly when i forced in a web address and also it said I needed the correct default browser, when I double clicked the Server Administrator icon iteself.  All of that is corrected now accept the login credentials issue, described above.

DELL OpenManage Integration Virtual Appliance update problems

Hi everybody,

I'm running VMware vSphere ESXi on many of our DELL servers. We're using the DELL OpenManage Integration Virtual Appliance to expand the functionality of our VMware vCenter Server. As some of you might know you can use the appliance to update firmware versions and check warranty information.

Recently I had problems with updating the CentOS Linux-based appliance. Maybe somebody of you is having the same issue - so I documented it. Just wanted to share this with you:

Best regards from Germany,

Christian.
