Hi,

For Dell Blades (m620's, m710HDs), and m1000e chassis, do they all have a hardwired thermal shutdown threshold (not a s/ware one)?

Thx,

Server Restore after replacing an S300 controller with an H700 controller

$

Objective:  Replacing an S300 controller with an H700 controller, and restore system.

Server Configuration: T310, S300 controller, single RAID-5 virtual disk made up of 4, 450 GB 15K drives, and SBS 2008.  The new controller is an H700.  The RAID-5 disk map shows a 47 MB "Unknown" partition, 3 GB primary partition that used by the "Recovery" volume, 202 GB primary partition that is used by the C: "OS" volume, with the remainder of the virtual drive being taken up by an extended partition, with used by the D: "DATAPART1" LOGICAL Volume.  (E.G. Typical Dell server configuration from the factory.)

Backups:  I have 2 MS backups and 2 StorageCraft ShadowProtect backups.  Both are supposed to be able to do a bare metal restore.

Concerns:
1.  On major OEM servers, there is always at least one partition that is not backed up, because it cannot be.  In this case there is at least one 47 MB "Unknown" partition.  So there really is not such thing as a bare metal restore in a situation like that.  I would assume that partition is made when you boot and start the setup with the Dell Documentation and Driver Disk?
2.  How do you get the new partitions to be exactly the same size as the originals during restore?  From what I read, you cannot restore to a smaller partition, even if there would be plenty of free space if you did.  Thus, if I would make the "OS" partition say 20 megs smaller, then I wouldn't be able to restore the "DATAPART1" volume and vice-versa.  All of my restores in the past have been to larger volumes, so I never had that problem.

Thoughts:
- Use diskpart to shrink the C: and D: a few GBs first, and then get new backups?

Thanks!

Anyone have an .exe program that can be triggered (using the "Execute application" under the "Alert Actions") to send out an SMTP email if there is an alert in OpenManage?

Sure would be nice if a simple SMTP email ability was built into OpenManage...

Thanks for any help!

PowerEdge T610 running ESXi 5.0 - want to install more disks. OSMA?

First off hi and I'm a bit of a noob on servers and ESXi.

We run a Poweredge T610 running ESXi 5.0 with 6 Windows 2008 servers.

Currently we have 2 x 3TB disks, I'm not sure what RAID we are using.

I have 2 x 2TB & 1 x 1TB disks I want to add to the server.

I've put them into the machine and now I need to get ESXi to see them. I think I've worked out that this can be done with OSMA?

I downloaded OSMA 7.3 ISO for ESXi and it tells me to burn to DVD and restart the server with the disk in and then it will walk me thru.

Am I on the right track here or not?

If so, would this install and add a VM to my ESXi or overwrite my whole server? Surprise

Help gratefully received.

iDRAC and Remote Console Gray

I just recently started managing a PowerEdge PowerEdge M1000e chassis with M600 blades. In July, prior to my coming on board, the chassis CMC was upgraded to 4.4. Since the upgrade, we are unable to access the iDRAC on the blades. When I try to launch the iDRAC or Remote Console, both buttons are gray. I also cannot find anything in the CMC about what version of iDRAC firmware is installed on the blades. Since they only upgraded the CMC on the chassis, I assume the iDRAC firmware is what ever comes with M600.

So, any help identifying why I cannot access iDRAC on the M600s would be appreciated.

iDRAC7 virtual console (Java) connection failed - PowerEdge R620

I'm trying to run the iDRAC7 virtual Console java applet.

After clicking thru several popups, it croaks "Connecting to virtual console server.... CONNECTION FAILED".

How to resolve  this?

- The machine is PowerEdge R620 with fully licensed iDRAC (connected thru a shared LAN port).

- iDRAC Firmware version 1.40.40 (build 17) , Lifecycle Controller Firmware 1.1.1.18

- Host OS: Win7 x64, Firefox 27.0.1,

- Java  1.7.0_51, security level set to minimum, internet connection set to DIRECT.

- iDRAC virtual console settings: plugin type=java, port 5900

- ActiveX plugin on 32-bit Windows XP with IE 8 works almost well (IE11 on Win7 is useless because of certificate issue).

Do I need a firmware update? Java applet update?

Thanks in advance

Hello.

I am having problems with the "Dell OpenManage Server Administrator" on my PowerEdge 2900.
Information does not appear in "system" or "storage manager" (No storage controllers detected).

I am using version 6.20.

I noticed that the "DSM SA Data Manager" service will not start.

The event log has the following message:

----

I have tried reinstalling, but no luck.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for the help.

Updating Dell iDRAC 6 Enterprise, BIOS, LifeCycle Controller Firmware in Dell PowerEdge R710 Server

$

I have a DPER710 server with ESXi 5.0 installed. I would like to update its firmware (all possible).

My current firmware:

1) BIOS: 6.1.0

2) iDRAC 6 Enterprise: 1.80

3) Life Cycle Controller: 1.5.1.57

As I found out from Dells websites, the current firmware versions are:

1) BIOS:6.4.0

2) iDRAC 6 Enterprise:  1.95

3) Life Cycle Controller:1.5.2.32

Before doing any updates I have some questions:

1) Can I update from the versions I have right through the current available versions all the mentioned components? (I mean, can I update, for example, iDRAC from 1.80 right to the 1.95?)

2) I have no "normal" OS installed on my server, just ESXi. Does it mean that I can update all those components I mentioned only through CLI? Is there any docs that explain the whole update procedure step by step?

3) About updating iDRAC firmware: I downloaded a file:   iDRAC6_1.95_A00_FW_IMG.exe unzipped it and got firmwimg.d6. Do I understand it correctly that its the newest available firmware? Can I update it through the iDRAC GUI (I have an IP address of the iDRAC web interface which works) and thats it? Will it update my iDRAC firmware on my DPER710 Server? Im not sure if its the newest available version though.

4) Should I update something more? I mean, for example, the PERC firmware?

Thanks 4 help! Smile

EDIT:

Ok, I successfully updated the iDRAC firmware (in the way I described in 3)) Big Smile Now looking for answers only to 1), 2), and 4).

Hi Everybody!

After the usual Java update (to Java 7 Update 51) the remote console does not start any more. The java application launcher shows a "Unable to launch application"-Error. Here some more details:

I hope that Dell will provide a fix ASAP.

Move iDRAC6 Enterprise from r710 to another r710

Anything I need to take into consideration when moving an iDRAC6 Enterprise card from one r710 to another r710?  The destination r710 already has iDRAC6 express so I am covered there.  I don't see any license export option like iDRAC7 so I'm guessing that doesn't apply to iDRAC6.

Will network configuration be retained once the card is installed in the destination server?

So anything else I need to worry about?  Thanks.

Email Notifications for Failed Drives Dell OpenManage Array Manager 3.6

I'd like to get an e-mail notification when a drive fails.  I see Events 571, then eventually Event 500 for the failed disk.   Is there any way to do be notified of these events?  I just stumbled upon seeing a drive fail after a reboot, when the system wouldn't start up.

I set up what I found on another post, the C:\DellSMTPNotify program in Alert Actions, but I do not think it notifies you when a drive fails.

Does anyone know where or if sysmemvolt is available via winrm? It is not in DCIM_MemoryView and I can find it anywhere else. Any help would be appreciated.

Syscfg.exe and omreport.exe get it fine:
C:\>syscfg --sysmemvolt
sysmemvolt=1.35v

C:\>omreport chassis biossetup
System Memory Voltage                             : 1.35V

T320/R320 - remote network boot

Hi,

I have T320 and R320 servers with IDRAC7.

I am searching for a mechanism by which I can reboot them remotely and ensure they network boot. However I do not want to set network boot permanently as the default boot option.

Does anyone know a solution for this?

Many thanks,

Andy

Adding an iDRAC6 Enterprise Card to a PowerEdge R710 with an existing Express Card - documentation please

Hi, hopefully the subject says it all.  Is there a link please?

Kind regards

Martin

Since the initial post this dialogue has developed:

Would you be able to clarify which network cable I should move from the “Shared NIC” bank to the new DRAC port once fitted?

Or  does an additional cable need to be installed?

You shouldn't need to change anything.

If you want it on a separate port you can add a new cable.

Please do not unhook either of the others, they are bonded on the OS.

I only raise it as my previous experience with installing drac modules turned the “LAN Port
passthrough” off, and sent all the drac traffic to the dedicated port on the card.

I’ll see if I can get an extra connection provisioned – just in case J Smile

Ok so we can login to iDrac perfectly fine when using the IP address in the address bar, but when we use DNS it will keep reloading the login page (put username and password in and it accepts then loads up the login page agian).  If we ping the DNS name it pings the correct IP address also?

Any Ideas? thanks

System Management Tools & Documentation ISO - Boot from USB?

$

Hi All,

I've setup a USB key that contains my favourite ISO images (MemTest86, Darik's Boot & Nuke etc.) and by using Grub4DOS I can boot my PowerEdge's from the USB key and select which ISO I wish to load.  Very handy, instructions how to do this can be found here: http://www.themudcrab.com/acronis_grub4dos.php#tagIntroduction

I would now like to add the Dell SMTD DVD ISO to this USB key.

I've copied over the ISO file to the /boot folder of my key and added the following to Grub4DOS's menu.lst file;

title Dell Systems Management Tools & Documentation 6.2.0 A00
find --set-root /boot/dsmt&d_6.2.0_a00.iso
map /boot/dsmt&d_6.2.0_a00.iso (hd32)
map --hook
root (hd32)
chainloader (hd32)

This successfully allows me to boot into the SMTD ISO and I can choose to load the "Dell Systems Build and Update Utility" from the blue menu.  It's after this point that things fall apart with a 'Having problems mounting Server Assistant meda' message and a continual 'Retrying Mount......' message.

I'm kinda guessing this is a problem with either the way the ISO is booted through Grub4DOS or if the SMTD DVD does it's own special multi-boot process using ISOLINUX.

Has anyone else tried to accomplish this with this method and able to shed any light on the subject?  I'd really like to get this working this way with G4D as it would mean the USB key can be updated with a newer version of the SMTD DVD just by copying over the new ISO and modifing the menu.lst file.  It's also my intention of eventually having a custom SUU repository on the key making server updates really easy.

BTW - I've googled for documentation from Dell for any official way to put the SMTD image onto a bootable USB key but haven't found any.

Many thanks in advance,

Cheers,

Zinc

Trouble with jnlp dowload from idrac on Windows 8

$

Ever since I upgraded to Windows 8 the idrac jnlp has been being downloaded with a long name that hides the extension.   i.e.  viewer.jnlp(pchxxxdb01-con@idrac-DBSDSR%2C+PowerEdge+R810+%2C+User.....)    So basically the file is downloaded but won't launch due to the missing extension.   The file name should only be viewer.jnlp  and nothing more.      The same behaviour is exhibited using IE, Firefox, or Chrome.     Renaming the file to have a jnlp extension gets around the issue but is annoying to do everytime.      Does anybody know if there is a setting in Java or a IDRAC update that will cure this problem?

Has anyone created one of these?  I am slogging through trying to put one together now.  This is a tedious process in which every access method must be mapped to a threat model.  I am getting started with the CMC, and will look at iDRAC and iKVM this morning.

If anyone has done this kind of background work on these machines please share.  The tedium...it burns!
