Is my RAID Virtual Disk Redundant?

$

Hi,

I'm working on replacing a failing drive in an MD1000 RAID connected via PERC 6/E.

I'm unsure about some terminology in the Server Administrator Storage Management User’s Guide.

It refers often to a 'Redundant Virtual Disk', e.g.

"Replacing a Failed Disk

You may need to replace a failed disk in the following situations:

  • Replacing a Failed Disk that is Part of a Redundant Virtual Disk

  • Replacing a Failed Physical Disk that is Part of a Non-Redundant Virtual Disk "

Does 'Redundant Virtual Disk" simply mean a virtual disk using a RAID configuration that has parity? My configuration is RAID-50. If so, then this is a redundant virtual disk, right? So I can follow instructions meant for a redundant virtual disk?

Thanks,

Michael

Asset TAG vs Service TAG

Hello,

What is the difference betweeen Asset and Service TAG?

In a case of motherboard replacement should be entered Asset TAG only or Service TAG should be changed too?

Thanks

Reformat Hard drives on blade server

$

We just installed an m1000E blade chassis with 4 M620 servers.  I am looking at a variety of new virtulization options.  One product claims a previous install failed and the apparent solution is to format the disk (mirrored 136 15K SAS) and reinstall.  The problem is, I've not encountered this before, and I'm really uncertain how I should accomplish this.  The installer does not have an option to reformat prior to install.

If anyone has a suggestion or can point me in a direction I'd greatly appreciate it.

Unstable iDRAC7 behaviour on M100E / M820

$

Hi all,

I've been in contact with Dell over this (SR 886756030) but don't have a working solution so far, as I have further contact with Dell I tough I might drop it here as well, perhaps someone experienced the same or has some thoughts about troubleshooting.

* Hardware and Software Versions
First I'll throw out some details about the hardware and relevant (?) firmwares:
chassis: M1000E running firmware 4.11
slot1-3: M710 running BIOS 6.3.0, CPLD 1.0.3, iDRAC 3.40 (build 9)
slot4:   M820 running BIOS 1.7.3, CPLD 1.0.0, iDRAC 1.20.20 (build 24)

* The problem (TLDR)
Accessing the iDRAC GUI of the M820 blade results in unrendered Submit/Cancel (Selection_048.png) buttons on the login page. If those do render and I login I get a "loading" screen (Selection_051.png) or a "-undefined-" menu structure.

* The problem (Detailed)
The problem is persistent on the system I try it from, I don't however get the same result on all systems:

File: Selection_048.png
This is how the web interface looks when connecting from:
- Windows Server 2008 R2 (Firefox 25.0.1, Chrome 31.0.1650.63m and IE 10.0.9200.16736) - server on which we tested initially
- Windows Server 2003 (IE 8 and FireFox 26.0) - Server in an external network connecting trough VPN
- Windows 7 (IE 11) - My laptop connecting trough VPN

File: Selection_050.png
This is how the same web interface looks from:
- Ubuntu 12.04 (Firefox 25.0.1 and Chrome 31.0.1650.57) - My Desktop using it's default gateway which we route 172.16.0.0/20 requests to our datacenter over a VPN connection
- Windows 7 Professional (Firefox 25.0.1/26.0) - My laptop again connecting trough VPN

Look at the difference in requests between Selection_048.png and Selection_050.png, on my Ubuntu box where I can access the interface two GET requests are followed after "masthead.css". These requests are not present on the Windows box and I suspect this is the cause of my our trouble...

* Attempted solutions
- Reseat the blade: no difference
- Try it in other slot: no difference
- Replaced the mobo: slight difference (systems that worked before don't work now and vice-versa)

Has anyone seen such erratic behaviour before or has a solution from their experience?

With kind regards,

Henk Kraal

DRAC7 firmware 1.50.50 https changes ?

After upgrading to DRAC7 firmware 1.50.50 our monitor tool (SolarWinds ipMonitor) is reporting 'The remote device timed out before sending a response' on the https monitor (tries to connect and get content from / ) Issue on 2 servers and when reverting to firmware 1.46.45 no issues.

I opened a supportcase with SolarWinds :

> If this is correct then I would suggest that you contact the vendor to find out what was changed in the new OS. As nothing has > changed in IPMonitor and the devices work until the upgrade then you will need to ascertain what changes on the device are causing > these timeouts and then we can look at working arround these changes to get the monitors running correcctly again.

Any hints ?

Lifecycle Controller - Firmware Update doesnt go past step 2

$

Hi all

Having a odd issue since updating to the (currently) latest version of the Lifecycle Controller 2 (specifically LC2 v1.1.5.165).

Have been successfully using the Dell build of the SUU 7.2.1 ISO (and previous versions) hooked up via Virtual Media , but since I updated to this version of the Lifecycle Controller 2, on step 2 of Launch Firmware Update section where you pick the drive (in our case, the image you have attached), I can see it normally, and choose Next and it does the Verify Selection part with the progress window as normal, but then when it finishes, it stays at the same Step 2 section again.

I can then click Next and the same thing happens...

Everything is pretty current (given I've managed to put on this very latest Lifecycle Controller firmware (had to use the Dell Repository Manager and export the bundle I'd made up to a linux bootable iso from the selections - anything relating to the SUU options you could do resulted in a buggy thing where you couldnt continue through this step due to something wrong with the catalog file it made - either it couldnt verify the digital signature or something, or that it couldnt decompress the xml, which wasnt surprising as i dont think it put it in a cab file like it is on the SUU iso, but anyhow, i digress sorry........) and I can view the firmware versions in the LC using View Current Versions and it will show me. Here's some fyi:

BIOS @ v1.6.0 (did this safely using a good old DOS boot disc via virtual media etc...never fails :D)
Diagnositics @ 0 (one of the reasons why i'm trying to just use whatever version is on the SUU for this)
IDRAC @ 1.40.40 (latest firmware for the iDRAC7 i could find - updated via the DRAC Web as per normal)
Lifecycle Controller @ 1.1.5.165 (latest i could find and newer than on the SUU 7.2.1 iso - updated as mentioned using the method I mentioned in the paragraph blub above)
System CPLD @ 1.0.3
and OS Drivers Pack @ 0 (dont think it matters to this process in question - we dont use the OS deployment thingy in the Lifecycle Controller as these are VMware 5.1 hosts so no need to etc)

Oh, and the server in question is a PE R720 :)

Not sure if its just that the Lifecycle Controller is newer than the ISO and thus ignoring its catalog, or that the format has changed slightly in the new one, and thus why its not recognising it as such.

Note that there are no errors in this, it just stays on that Step 2 window after its scanned the drive (ISO) like it hadnt even done it.

Things I've tried are pretty much turn the server off completely, and use the Hardware Configuration > Delete Configuration and Reset Defaults (as that clears Lifecycle Controller Configs as well as alot of other stuff - in the thinking it was something corrupt somewhere in there that needed a clearing).

Any ideas or thoughts would be welcome.

Certainly not a show stopper but I'd like to know if its going to be the case for the other servers once I get this one configured and into production - I guess I'm being precautionary too, as it would be a bit of a pain if for some reason this avenue is now faulty and would stop me using this method to update the firmware of the other components easily for sure.

Cheers

The difference between Enterprise iDRAC7 and just the plain old ordinary one?

I will be receiving some M420s in a week or so that I plan on installing into an M1000e blade enclosure.  Is there an advantage to upgrading the iDRAC licensing on the individual nodes to Enterprise?  If so, what is it?

Can't find IDRAC7 Enterprise license upgrade

Receiving a new R620 server in a few days. It has IDRAC7 Express installed.

I tried calling Dell sales many times asking for the Enterprise upgrade and India hangs up on me everytime because they can't understand what I want. I give them the Dell part number and they say they have no listing for it then hang up on me.

It is easy to buy the R420 Enterprise license online, but I do not think that will work with the 600 series servers.

Where can  I get this upgrade. Anybody?

OME 1.2 SNMP alerts - how can I make them less generic?

$

I have configured SNMP alerting but the alerts are so generic that I have to log onto the server to see what happened. Example, last night the array controller batter started a recharge cycle.

The event logged in the system log is quite specific:

But the actual alert in OME is so generic I can't tell what happened:   and the email alert it sends me also has the same lack of information.

Is there some kind of setting that will give more information?

updating CMC firmware

Hey!

We have an m1000 chassis that is running version 3 firmware and a customer would like to upgrade to the latest.

I've read conflicting procedures on doing this. One says update both primary and secondary at the same time and another document saying switch to secondary upgrade it and then switchback upgrade it first CMC.

What's the latest wisdom on this? Thanks!

idac6 bad data returned from winrm commands

$

Issuing winrm commands to idrac returns bad data or no data. There are a bunch of servers that don't work but approximately 5x that amount that do work okay on the same FW revisions. The issue is on both R610 and R410.

Pretty standard FW level:
Idrac=1.90
LCC=1.5.5.27

The following example command returns bad data which is consistent across all that are broken. For starters the model is not T710 and the ChassisServiceTag doesnt match the ServiceTag like it does normally if the system is not a blade. All the bad data shows the model as T710 and the ChassisServiceTag as JDTR5L1. They also all beleive they have only one dimm installed. BIOS version is incorrect but seems to also be incorrect on the ones that are working.

NOTE: Replace <idrac_IP> with idrac name or IP. Change password if it is not the default of calvin.

I tried "racadm racreset hard" with no success. Next step is power drain. After that is factory defaults. After that is LC Repair which seems to fix a lot of random issues.

I opened a dell case already but would like to know if anyone ever seen this issue?

Thanks for any help.

Extended Storage in the Chassis Management Controller - M1000e. How does it work?

$

My M1000e will be arriving at my OEM integrator on December 26th.  I want them to upload the ESXi 5.5 iso to the extended storage and use that to install the M420 operating systems.  Finding documentation about this particular feature (extended storage) is proving a challenge.  Has anyone else already completed this quest?  If so, then please point me to the documents.  Thanks.

iDRAC7 Security Review

Recently I have been working with (gasp!) SuperMicro servers, and their IPMI implementation.  Upon testing and review I have concluded that my only secure course of action with regard to the SM implementation is to completely disable it.  It is just too fat of a target, and too easy to break.

So what about Dell's iDRAC?  How secure is this system anyway.  Is there a white paper narrowly focused on the security of this system?

Cannot logon, just sticks at verifying details.

It seems to work for several hours after reset then suddenly wont let you logon again.. just goes back to the logon screen.

Any ideas?

checksum errors updating CMC and iKVM

Hello, I have a customer that is trying to update his CMC version 3.21 to 4.4 on m1000 chassis and iKVM firmware. He keeps getting checksum errors.

He's tried updating from other PC's and servers without any luck.

Do you have any advice on what could be going wrong?

ESXi 5.1 u1 (build 1157734) + OMSA 7.3 - can't login to administration pannel (OME 1.1 works fine)

Hi, Folks,

I have updated OMSA 7.2 A00 to OMSA 7.3 A00 and after that I can't login to managment console from my workstation:

I type IP-address, username, password and after clicking Submit (with ingnore certificates warnings enabled), nothing happens, page just reload without any error, in the same time, I can login to another ESXi server, with same version of OMSA installed.

I downgraded OMSA 7.3 to 7.2 on ESXi, but it didn't fix my problem.

I have OME 1.1 installed on other host and I can see, that there is Server Administrator 7.2.0 installed on my ESXi (see. attached picture), if check list of installed packets, OpenManage 7.2 also will be in this list.

Any ideas how to fix it ?

Thanks in advance.

TPM - The dreaded brick-maker.

I need to find out as much as I can about how TPM is implemented in the m420.  I ran down this road with IBM, and they had nobody who knew anything about it apart from "it is implemented by the motherboard manufacturer."  I found that a lame cop-out.  Does DELL offer anything better?  I would like to be able to bind my OS to the TPM, and use it to hold keys.  What documentation does DELL have on the subject?

Change BIOS settings without downing server T110 II

I inherited a number of T110 II servers that are spread out over 250 miles of territory.  I noticed that a number of these servers don't turn back on after a power outage, requiring user intervention.  Is there a way to change the BIOS setting that ensures the server is always running when power is supplied without rebooting the machine?  ie - Can I change BIOS settings within the Windows server 2008 OS?
